Pride celebrations everywhere trace their heritage to the eventful evening of June 28, 1969 when patrons of the Stonewall Inn in New York City said “No more!” to the harassing tactics of the New York Police. That protest has grown to annual events held in major cities throughout the world. In San Diego, our first rally was held in 1975. Today, across the world we still face challenges to our diverse community. The Stonewall Rally is a call to re-energize the Spirit of Stonewall and focus our energy on the new wave and next generation of the LGBT movement and LGBT activism.
The Spirit of Stonewall Rally is a time to recognize and honor leaders who are working hard to preserve our gains, and to meet the many challenges facing our collective community. Cheering crowds and energetic speakers all lead up to the annual raising of the Hillcrest Pride Flag and the unveiling of a new historic monument, officially launching San Diego Pride Weekend!
MC: Fernando Lopez, marriage equality activist and Public Affairs Director for San Diego LGBT Pride.
Speakers will include: Connor Maddocks, Project Trans Coordinator for The San Diego LGBT Center; Norma Chavez-Peterson, Associate Director of ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties; and Vincent Pompei, Director of Adolescent Well-Being Programs for HRC.
This year San Diego LGBT Pride will honor: Champion of Pride Araceli "Cheli" Mohamed; Friends of Pride Cindy Green and - from the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) - Ted Olson and David Boies; Stonewall Service Award Winner Max Disposti and the North County LGBTQ Resource Center; and Stonewall Community Service Award Winners Sean Bohac, Gibrán Guido, Hector Martinez, and Jeri Muse.
