Zachary Schlagel is manager of Government and Community Affairs for UC San Diego Health Sciences and has worked here since 2007. His responsibilities include managing outreach activities and strategic planning on behalf of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego and UC San Diego Health System.
Mr. Schlagel previously worked as a community representative for Congressman Bob Filner and served as the Congressman’s local advisor on health care, education and environmental issues. He also acted as the Congressman’s liaison to Chula Vista, updating him on events and issues of importance. Mr. Schlagel has also worked on a number of local and national campaigns.
A strong believer in the importance of volunteering, Mr. Schlagel serves as the co-company leader for the UC San Diego Heart Walk Team, as well as a legislative ambassador for the American Cancer Society. He also serves on the board for San Diego LGBT Pride, the Mexican-American Business & Professionals Association and the American Lung Association’s San Diego Chapter. He was recently named as one of San Diego’s “40 Under 40” by San Diego Metro Magazine for his many contributions to the community and UC San Diego Health System. After chairing UC San Diego Health System’s Smoke-Free Task Force, Mr. Schlagel has been sought out as an expert on how to create and implement a smoke-free policy. One of Mr. Schlagel’s proudest moments came upon receiving UC San Diego’s Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action and Diversity award from Chancellor Marye Anne Fox for his work in fostering diversity throughout UC San Diego Health System.
He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from UC San Diego in 2004. A lifelong San Diegan, Mr. Schlagel currently lives in Clairemont with his wife, Rachel and their son, Jack
