Joy is Still Ours

Dear Pride Family,

In the wake of the 2024 election, San Diego Pride remains steadfast in our commitment to support and uplift the LGBTQIA+ community by creating spaces, events and programs to move us forward together. While the results may bring new political dynamics, our calling is clear: to protect and empower our community through advocacy, education and celebration.

This election season has highlighted the critical need for San Diego Pride and the part we play in bringing the community together. Our contribution to the community of hosting Pride programs and events in these coming months will be even more vital and important. We must unify our voices in solidarity to protect all that we have fought for and stand shoulder to shoulder to face the challenges ahead.

There is much at stake and yet I still believe we have opportunity for liberation and joy. The LGBTQIA+ community is one of resilience and grit. I call for us to invoke the power of those who fought (and won) before us as we carve our path forward through these uncertain times. We need the strength of our full community working together to continue to create safe and secure spaces to gather, to fight, to heal and to love.

We have been here before. We are strong. We have persevered through oppression and discrimination. This is especially true for our trans community and families with trans youth who face unique and urgent threats. San Diego Pride is more committed than ever to our work to provide safe programs, spaces and events for everyone in our LGBTQIA+ community.

This is not the time to hold back, rather NOW is the time to rise up — to step up.  We are already preparing for our annual parade and festival in July, but we invite you to join us in community as a volunteer or by attending (or signing up to volunteer for) one of our events like Youth Leadership Academy.next weekend.

We look ahead with determination and hope. San Diego Pride will be here  to celebrate, advocate and support LGBTQIA+ individuals, families  and allies. As we step into this new political chapter, San Diego Pride urges our community to remain vigilant, engaged, and united in the pursuit of a just and inclusive society. Together, we will face these challenges with resilience, compassion, and the unwavering belief that equality belongs to us all. Joy is still ours to own.

With Pride,
