Threads of Resistance: How LGBTQ+ Style Shapes Culture & Resistance

Dear community,

Fashion has always been more than clothing for LGBTQIA+ people. It has been language, armor, celebration and resistance. Long before many of us could safely speak our truth, we expressed it through what we wore. It’s always been about the cut of a jacket, the shimmer of sequins, the simplicity of a well-tailored suit and always the refusal to simply blend in.

In a world that has policed queer and trans bodies, getting dressed has often been an act of defiance. Fashion allows us to reclaim identity, signal belonging and imagine realities where we exist fully and freely. For our community, style has never been just about shining. It has been about survival.

LGBTQIA+ culture makers have shaped not only queer expression but global culture itself. Activist and icon Marsha P. Johnson embodied visible resistance with her flower crowns and fearless presence. Designer Willi Smith transformed American fashion by blending street style, art and accessibility, while disco icon Sylvester turned glamour into a declaration of queer joy. Today, artists like Billy Porter continue that lineage, challenging gender norms and redefining fashion on the world’s most visible stages.

At San Diego Pride, we celebrate the historic and contemporary architects of style who transformed personal expression into collective liberation. Their courage paved the way for generations of LGBTQIA+ designers, artists and dreamers shaping culture through fashion.

That spirit is exactly why we created Fabric of Pride, San Diego Pride’s inaugural fashion show fundraiser. Hosted at the historic US Grant Hotel, this unforgettable evening will showcase LGBTQIA+ designers, artists, models and burlesque performers while raising critical funds for Pride’s year-round education, advocacy and arts programs.

Our boldest declarations of joy matter now more than ever.

So the only question left to ask is: Who are you wearing?
